The 67th Annual Golden Globes Wrap-Up

By: Laura Elaine Uribe
Despite the pouring rain that made its way over Beverly Hills on Sunday afternoon, the stars were out and ready to celebrate the 67th Annual Golden Globes.
From television networks across the globe, like CNN International and E!, reporters were filled with high hopes at interviewing the nominees as they made their way onto the red carpet in front of the famous Beverly Hilton Hotel.
Although fashion, hair and makeup are usually hot topics at events like these, it was obvious that there was one accessory that most stars had to depend on as they posed for the photographers while attempting not to have their dresses and tuxedos soaked.

As How I Met Your Mother star Neil Patrick Harris joked to Ryan Seacrest, "It's really not whose dressed well but who has the biggest umbrella."
At 8 p.m. ET on NBC, the event commenced with host Ricky Gervais mocking Steve Carell's American version of The Office with the UK version that he created.
It was a bit surprising to see however that Gervais had very little screen-time compared to other past award show hosts. There was no song and dance or skits but instead plenty of awkward dialogue about drinking and some of his works being released on DVD. It was evident to television viewers that the celebrity audience was not always amused and were forcing many smiles.
Not surprisingly, the futuristic fantasy film Avatar, which has already surpassed the over $1 billion gross mark at the box-office, was the winner for Best Motion Picture-Drama.
James Cameron also won Best Director for it, beating Quentin Tarantino's World War II Nazi revenge tale Inglourious Basterds and Kathryn Bigelow's modern war film The Hurt Locker, despite her winning Best Director at the Critic's Choice Awards that took place last Friday evening and aired on channels like Vh1.

The Hangover won Best Motion Picture - Comedy Or Musical beating out Rob Marshall's star-studded film Nine and the independent blockbuster (500) Days of Summer.
In dramatic films, Sandra Bullock scored her first Golden Globe for her performance in the critically-acclaimed The Blind Side and Jeff Bridges won for Crazy Heart.
Within the categories regarding comedies or musicals, Meryl Streep won for her work as television cook Julia Child in the film Julie & Julia, while Robert Downey, Jr. won for playing the title role in Sherlock Holmes.
Downey provided one of the most memorable speeches of the night when he made what he believed was an anti-thank you speech. His goal was clearly not to thank anyone since he believed that he deserved the award on his own merit but ended up thanking them anyways in what he said was more of a list of who not to thank.
Actors who also won for their supporting roles included Christoph Waltz for his comical-yet-frightening performance as Col. Hans Landa in Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds and Mo'nique for her mesmerizing and powerful performance as an abusive mother in Precious.

Martin Scorsese was this years honorable winner for the 2010 Cecil B. DeMille Award which honors those who have contributed greatly in the fields of television and film. Scorsese's works were celebrated including Goodfellas, The Departed and the upcoming highly-anticipated film Shutter Island.
In television, AMC's Mad Men won for best dramatic series and Glee won for best television comedy or musical.

Julianna Marguiles won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress In A Television Series - Drama for her work in the new CBS show The Good Wife while United States of Tara star Toni Collette won in the comedy or musical category.
Likewise, the best actor in a dramatic series award went Michael C. Hall for Dexter and to Alec Baldwin for the comedy 30 Rock, although he didn't attend the event.

Despite the glitz and glamour of the night, it was clear that there was a bigger issue of concern on everyone's mind. In order to support the victims of last week's earthquake in Haiti, the stars wore ribbons of support and some who spoke urged viewers to find out how to donate by going to NBC's Web site.
It will be no surprise to see stars continuing to show their support at the many upcoming award ceremonies in the near future.
